If you’re still harboring misconceptions about whose financial well being our president really cares about, I hope you didn’t miss the brief in Wednesday’s Journal-World about the President’s and Vice President’s tax burdens. As the brief described, these two wealthy men (and many more like them) fared very well this tax season. They have seen their tax burdens reduced significantly, thanks to their passing of tax cuts that benefited them and the small percentage of Americans they really represent. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average income in the U.S. in 2001 was $42,228. Just this year, then, both of these men saved more in taxes than the vast majority of us make in a year. How about you? Did you see any significant reduction in your tax burden this year? How many thousands of dollars did you save? Did you even get the few hundred dollars in savings they promised? If you’re one of the more than 2,000,000 Americans who have lost their jobs since Bush took over, you may have even paid taxes on the paltry unemployment benefits you received. Face it. Your vote for Bush, perhaps based on his opposition to abortion or his jingoistic foreign policy or his support for discriminatory school vouchers or his proclamations that he’s a Christian and a “compassionate” conservative, helped put an administration in office that couldn’t care less about your well-being and peace of mind.
