Maureen Dowd should know better than to refer to a woman as "lovely"

I was shocked to read Maureen Dowd in her March 25 column refer to one
of the 9/11 family members as "the lovely Kristin Breitweiser." This
label is not a compliment in this context. It's a sexist, diminutive,
intellectually dismissive label that she would not likely apply to any
of the males she mentioned in the column. Can you imagine her referring
to "the studly Paul Wolfowitz?" Or "the hunky Richard Clark?" Why
didn't she think to refer to Breitweiser as "courageous" or
"determined?"
These
labels, often subconsciously applied, only serve to reduce women's
influence, leadership abilities and credibility in politics and
business. It's really sad when one professional woman--who should know
better--does it to another.
