The Washington Post recently quoted a U.S. commander saying that his
troops had seized an Iraqi Army officer's wife and children from their
home and left a note that if the Iraqi general turned himself in, his
family would be released. Now we can add kidnapping to the list of war
crimes perpetrated in our names.
We are responsible for these acts as long as we stand by and allow them
to happen without expressing outrage and demanding that they be stopped
and that those who commit them be held accountable.
But who would bring them to justice? And where? The U.S. doesn't
recognize the International Criminal Court and recently made foreign
aid distribution to African nations contingent upon those countries
agreeing not to refer ICC charges against U.S. citizens. Oops. Add
extortion to the list.
What's next? Concentration camps for U.S. citizens of Arab descent?
Reeducation camps for U.S. citizens who dissent? When will these crimes
become too much for Americans to accept? Our collective tolerance level
is shameful.
The CIA told the President that Saddam would likely become a threat to
the U.S. only if we threatened him. While so much of what this country
supposedly stands for is being torn down under a guise of "security",
we're all in more danger now than before.
Our President lied and our soldiers are dying. It's time we bring Bush
and his cohort war profiteers to justice for their crimes against
humanity and against our Constitution. Impeach the Bush regime!
