Conservatives aren't stupid, but they are blinded by dogma and fear

I just love Cal Thomas' indignation over the University of California
study that researched the emotional mindset it requires to be
"conservative." It's funny how often people who want to deny something
that exposes them for who they are bring it out into the open for all
to see, helping to spread the message.
In case you missed it, the study by Cal psychologists concluded that
the conservative mindset is likely to accept dogma, to be fearful and
aggressive, to accept or endorse inequality; to have an inability or
unwillingness to accept that life is not black and white; and to avoid
reason and rational discourse. Although Thomas attempted to
dispel the study by attacking its authors' politics, you need only look
at history to see the validity of the study's conclusions.
The history of human politics is defined by a clash over social
progress. One side wants progress and justice and the other side wants
either the status quo or a return to an even less enlightened state.
Today, what's at stake is the future of the human race. Those who want
to preserve the old oppressive ways of oligarchy and monarchy stand
solidly against peace on Earth and the betterment of world society.
But who in their right mind thinks that social progress can be stopped?
How can Thomas and others who champion the discredited social values of
the past justify their politics? Progress happens. Period. They must
not be thinking clearly. Oops, I guess that's the point.
